Sorianny Vasquez received a special swearing-in ceremony at police headquarters, where she was presented with her own uniform and badge, and since her mother is a West New York cadet currently in the police academy (graduating in less than a month), it was fitting that her badge number be the same as her mothers.

“We were truly humbled and grateful to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, as well as Sorianny’s family, for giving us the privilege to be a part of this special experience,” Mayor Albio Sires, who is also the commissioner of the Department of Public Safety, said in a statement.

“This was an opportunity for Sorianny to learn about what it takes to be a police officer, but by being in her presence we learned what true courage and perseverance looks like.”

Her day began with the swearing-in ceremony and presentation of her uniform and badge, and then continued with an exclusive tour of the police station, guided by officers who showcased the various aspects of police work.

The department also planned a variety of interactive activities to give Vasquez insight and firsthand experience into the skills needed to ensure public safety during a police officer’s typical day.

Among them was a mock arrest conducted in front of Town Hall, where she successfully “apprehended” a suspect.

However, what was universally considered the highlight of the day was the opportunity for Vasquez to witness an emergency helicopter landing, which showcased the coordinated efforts required by the West New York Police Department during critical situations.

The helicopter flew over Town Hall before landing at the West New York Little League field where Vasquez was given a complete tour of the aircraft.
