LETTER: Hudson County sheriff thanks ‘frontline workers’ battling COVID-19

In a letter to the editor, Hudson County Sheriff Frank Schillari is issuing thanks to all the “frontline workers” workers battling the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dear Editor,

The COVID-19 pandemic has quickly spread throughout the entire nation and our very own community is beginning to feel some of the most devastating effects.

In a time where we are encouraged to stay home to flatten the curve and ultimately stop this deadly virus from spreading, there are countless dedicated men and women who are still showing up to work every day to protect us during this period of uncertainty.

We often refer to them as our frontline workers, but for me there are not enough words in the dictionary to describe the importance of these individuals.

These men and women are not only willingly putting themselves in harm’s way, they are sacrificing precious moments with their families to keep us safe and healthy.

I would like to particularly acknowledge those Hudson County public servants that we have lost to this awful disease:

Jersey City Councilman Michael Yun, Hudson County Corrections Officer Bernard Waddell Sr., Hudson County Corrections Nurse Daisy Doronila, Hudson County Corrections Nurse Edwin Montanano and Hudson County Corrections Commissary Coordinator Sergio Rossini.

We have also lost a great deal of fantastic fathers, mothers, grandfathers, grandmothers, sons, daughters and overall wonderful people. We join their families in mourning their loved ones.

To the:

Healthcare workers across the globe working excruciatingly long shifts and traveling to the epicenters of the pandemic to assist…

Law enforcement officers patrolling our streets and responding to emergencies at all hours of the day, including our Weights and Measures Unit protecting residents from price gouging and our 911 operators who have received countless calls since this pandemic began …

Firefighters keeping our homes and businesses safe …

EMS squads taking on additional shifts to connect individuals with the life saving health services they deserve …

Employees working in grocery stores, pharmacies and other essential businesses who are stocking the shelves so we all stay fed and have access to the medications we may need …

Delivery drivers who are bringing goods to our doors so we can limit our own time outside …

Senior citizen caregivers who put their own health at risk to serve our most vulnerable residents…

And public servants monitoring this unprecedented situation and making the tough decisions that will help fight this virus…

Thank you. We cannot get through this without you.

Sincerely,

Frank X. Schillari
Hudson County Sheriff
