Jury convicts Florida man of 2021 fatal shooting at BJ’s parking lot in Jersey City

A Hudson County jury convicted a Florida man of a February 28th, 2021 fatal shooting at the BJ’s parking lot in Downtown Jersey City earlier today.

Ariel Dumit, 37, of New Port Richey, Florida, was found guilty of murder, possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, and unlawful possession of a weapon.

The verdict was delivered before the Hudson County Superior Court Judge Carlo Abad following a two-week trial. The State was represented in this matter by Hudson County Assistant Prosecutors Erica Bertuzzi and Luisa Florez.

On Sunday, February 28th, 2021, at approximately 8:18 p.m., members of the Jersey City Police Department responded to the BJ’s Parking Lot at 396 Marin Boulevard on reports of a shooting.

Responding officers found a man, later identified as Christian Parra, 34, of Jersey City, with an apparent gunshot wound to the torso. He was transported to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 9 p.m.

The Regional Medical Examiner’s Office determined the cause of death to be a gunshot wound to the torso and the manner of death to be homicide. Dumit was arrested in Florida about six weeks after the incident occurred.

Dumit faces 30 years to life in New Jersey State Prison at sentencing, which is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, July 13th.
