On Friday, at approximately 10:00 p.m., Jersey City police officers were dispatched to 144 Orient Ave. on a report of “a violent, emotional disturbed” man, Prosecutor Esther Suarez said in a statement.

Upon arrival, responding officers entered the building and were directed to the first floor
where they engaged the individual and attempted to calm him, authorities said.

Their attempts were unsuccessful and ultimately, after the man produced a weapon, one officer discharged his service weapon, officials said.

The individual, later identified as a 36-year-old man who lived at that address with his parents, was struck in the torso. He was transported by Emergency Medical Services to Jersey City Medical Center where he is in critical, but stable condition.

Pursuant to Attorney General guidelines, the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office has taken over the investigation from the Jersey City Police Department and the Prosecutor’s Internal Affairs Unit is in the early stages of the investigation.

The prosecutor’s office also said that the New Jersey Division of Criminal Justice was
immediately notified of the incident.
