“The safety of our residents and visitors is our top priority, and these new security cameras will provide the Hoboken Police Department with an important tool to help deter and investigate criminal activity,” Mayor Ravi Bhalla said in a statement.

“By enhancing security in our parks and integrating advanced technology, we are creating an even safer environment for everyone to enjoy our public spaces with greater peace of mind.”

The comprehensive surveillance with real-time live feed capabilities and the cameras will be monitored by the Hoboken Police Department, enhancing public safety with faster response times and providing valuable investigative tools.

“These cameras, which provide additional eyes on Church Square Park, and eventually on other public spaces, give HPD yet another tool to enhance our ability to protect the residents of Hoboken,” added Police Chief Steven Aguiar.

“I’d like to express my thanks to the Mayor and City administration for their continued commitment to supporting HPD with vital technology and resources.”

The new camera system, paid for primarily through Hudson County’s Open Space Trust Fund, is a key part of a larger public safety improvement plan for Church Square Park, that also includes temporary and permanent lighting upgrades to increase visibility.

The upgrades came after a Halloween assault in the park in broad daylight sparked concerns from residents.

The city and Hoboken Police Department announced plans to launch a new Community Policing Bureau on Wednesday, which will require city council approval, as HCV first reported.

This bureau will consist of specially trained officers focused on building community relationships through proactive, community-centered approaches to policing, crime prevention, and quality of life issues with an increased on-street presence.
