Sunday at approximately 10:20 p.m., the North Bergen Police Department was notified of shots fired on Paterson Plank Road in the area of 14th Street, Hudson County Prosecutor Wayne Mello said in a statement.

Responding officers located the body of a man, later identified as Manuel Colon, 61, of North Bergen, with an apparent gunshot wound to the upper body. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The cause and manner of death are pending with the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.

During the preliminary investigation, the North Bergen Police Department identified Luciano Vargas, 59, as a person of interest.

The Wayne Police Department responded to Vargas’ residence and the Passaic County Sheriff’s Office S.W.A.T. Team was activated after Vargas barricaded himself inside the home. Vargas was later found deceased with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

This matter is being investigated as a domestic dispute, Mello added.
