UPDATED: HCPO Homicide Unit and Jersey City police investigating fatal shooting downtown

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and the Jersey City Police Department are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred downtown last night.

“The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and the Jersey City Police Department are investigating the shooting death of a male in area of Coles Street and 16th Street. More to follow,” the HCPO tweeted at 9:41 p.m. Saturday night.

On Monday morning at 9:54 a.m., Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez released more information.

At approximately 8:02 p.m., the Jersey City Police Department was notified of a shooting in the area of 16th Street and Coles Street, Suarez said in a statement.

Upon arrival, responding officers located an injured male, later identified as Isaiah Velasquez, 17, of Jersey City, with an apparent gunshot wound to the torso.

He was transported to Jersey City Medical Center and pronounced dead at approximately 8:57 p.m. The cause and manner of death are pending the findings of the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.

During the course of the investigation, Isaiah McCord, 22, of Bayonne, was charged with murder and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

He was arrested at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in Secaucus yesterday and is being detained at the Hudson County Correctional Facility pending his first court appearance.
