“When the County recently adopted their budget, we learned Secaucus’ contribution to county taxes increased $6,200,000.00 (30.36%). This was an unprecedented increase. I immediately began speaking with officials at the county and state level seeking tax relief. The County Commissioners passed a resolution in support of our request for state aid and Senator Brian Stack spearheaded efforts to bring our plight to the forefront,” Gonnelli wrote in a letter today.

“Senator Stack assured me he would fight to help our community, and his tenacity produced results. We have been notified by Senator Stack that the State budget includes aid to Secaucus in the amount of $3,000,000.00 to offset the county tax increase. I want to extend my sincere thanks to Senator Brain Stack, County Executive Craig Guy and the County Commissioners for their support of our residents and business community.”

The Hudson County Board of Commissioners voted 8-1 for a $713.6 million budget with an overall tax increase of 5.59 percent last month, as HCV first reported, with Secaucus by far facing the largest tax increase among the 12 local municipalities.

The $3 million for the Town of Secaucus was in the $58.8 billion state budget, which cleared the statehouse on Monday.

The state Senate approved the budget bill in a 26-13 vote, while the Assembly approved it in a 52-27 vote with one abstention. Gov. Phil Murphy then announced signing the bill into law early Tuesday morning, just after midnight.
