“The Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit is investigating a collision on Route 495 in North Bergen in which one scooterist has died. Please avoid the area and expect delays,” the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office tweeted about an hour ago.

On Sunday at 9:55 a.m., Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez released additional information.

Shortly before 3:45 p.m. Saturday, the North Bergen Police Department was notified of a motor vehicle collision near the west bound ramp for Route 495 in North Bergen in the area of John F. Kennedy Boulevard and 32nd Street in Union City.

Responding police officers found an injured motor scooter operator at that location. The man, who has not been identified at this time, was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 3:50 p.m.

During the preliminary investigation, it was discovered that the deceased man was operating a Transpro motor-scooter near the ramp for Route 495 as it traveled from the intersection of John F. Kennedy Boulevard and 32nd Street.

The motor scooter collided with the rear passenger side tires of a Freightliner fuel truck as the motor scooter attempted to merge onto the west bound ramp of Route 495.

The fuel truck did not remain at the scene but was located nearby, along with the driver, during the preliminary investigation.

The Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit and the North Bergen Police Department are actively investigating this case and no arrests have been made at this time.
