Charges against Emmanuel Gonzalez, 33, of West New York have been upgraded in the
death of his mother, Irma L. Pons Gonzalez, after the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office
determined the cause of death to be multiple blunt force trauma and the manner of death to be homicide.

As a result, the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit has charged Gonzalez with first-degree murder.

On Thursday, January 14th, at approximately 1:30 p.m., members of the West New York
Police Department responded to 439 66th Street, apartment No. 2, on a report of an unresponsive 62- year-old female.

Upon arrival, officers were met by Gonzalez, who is the son of the victim.

Officers were directed to a bedroom where the female, later identified as Irma L. Pons Gonzalez, was found unresponsive. Pons-Gonzalez was pronounced dead at 1:46 p.m.

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit initially arrested Gonzalez on Thursday afternoon and charged him with aggravated assault, a second-degree crime.

Suarez credited the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit with the investigation and the West New York Police Department for assisting.
