“This is a historic moment for the future of health care in Hoboken and Hudson County, as our local hospital now has new leadership with a clear track record of success. Several years ago, HRH took over the Meadowlands Hospital, that, like Hoboken, was on the brink of collapse,” Bhalla said in a statement.

“Just a few short years later, they transformed it into a thriving hospital that is well respected and utilized by the local community. I have no doubt that with the proper resources they will replicate that success in Hoboken and build a thriving, quality healthcare system for our community. I look forward to working with the leadership at HRH in the weeks and months ahead to ensure that residents have the high-performing healthcare option that they deserve.”

Bhalla’s remarks come after CarePoint Health’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy was resolved on Friday with HRH taking control of the Bayonne Medical Center, Hoboken University Medical Center, and Christ Hospital in Jersey City, as HCV first reported.

The four hospitals have been deemed Hudson Health System, a concept that was first unsuccessfully attempted in January 2024 and eventually came to fruition at the end of October.

CarePoint declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy to secure $67 million in financing less than a week later, a move that was completely expected for those following along since September, when their board began discussing financial restructuring moves that included bankruptcy.

The Hoboken mayor, who is running for a state Assembly seat in the 32nd Legislative District instead of seeking re-election, joined the CarePoint board in September shortly after the bankruptcy discussions began.

Bhalla’s former chief of staff, Vijay Chaudhuri, has worked for HRH since departing City Hall in February, with the Mile Square City mayor also recently advocating for a  hospital redevelopment plan that has not yet made it to a vote.
