Just before 8:30 a.m. this morning at the intersection of West 56th Street and Avenue C, a 63 year-old crossing guard was struck by a motor vehicle as she made her way to the sidewalk after crossing school-children, according to Police Capt. Eric Amato.

The vehicle, a four-door white sedan that was driven by a man, turned left onto Avenue C from West 56th Street. As the vehicle entered the crosswalk, it struck the crossing guard, causing her to fall onto the hood of the vehicle before falling to the street.

The driver stopped his vehicle and assisted her to the sidewalk before leaving the scene toward Jersey City. No further information about the driver and vehicle are available at this time.

The victim complained of pain to her back and was taken to an area hospital to be treated. No children were present in the street at the time of the crash and the crash remains under investigation, Amato added.
