At 4:31 p.m. today, Bayonne firefighters were dispatched to 131 West 54th Street on a report of “smoke in the building,” Chief Keith Weaver said in a statement.

When firefighters arrived, they found fire in a second floor hallway and air shaft that extended up to the third floor hallway. They used two hand-lines to extinguish the blaze and the fire was declared under control in approximately 30 minutes, officials said.

“Firefighters responded rapidly and professionally, and due to their actions they quickly extinguished this fire. A fire investigation is underway, however, the fire is not deemed suspicious at this time,” Weaver added.

After a structural evaluation, the building department allowed all residents to return to their homes yesterday evening.
