“I originally pulled my petitions to run for re-election under the impression I was still with the Davis team. After finding out I was replaced and knowing how very difficult and physical campaigning is I have decided not to run for re-election. This was a difficult decision,” Gullace said this morning.

“I will always be involved with my community just not from a political position. I enjoy helping my constituents, friends and neighbors and will continue to do so. At this time I will not be participating in any campaigns or endorsing any candidates. I will take this time to continue my healing process. I would like to thank everyone for their understanding and support.”

About two weeks ago, Gullace announced that Mayor Jimmy Davis informed him he wouldn’t be running on his ticket, as HCV first reported, despite claims to the contrary as recently as December.

Gullace had successfully run with Davis in 2014 and 2018.

Jackie Weimmer, the girlfriend of political consultant Mark Meyers, is currently pegged as the frontrunner to be the mayor’s council candidate in the 2nd Ward, though Davis hasn’t shown his hand yet.

“Mayor Davis has a great deal of respect for Councilman Gullace and is thankful for his service to the City of Bayonne, but he has made a decision that it’s time for new leadership in the Second Ward and will be announcing his support for a candidate soon,” campaign spokesman Phil Swibinski said on January 21st.

Currently, 1st Ward Councilman Neil Carroll, 3rd Ward Councilman Gary La Pelusa, and Councilman-at-Large Juan Perez are all announced as Davis running mates, with Council President Sharon Ashe-Nadrowski declaring she would run for mayor in December.

Nadrowski has not announced any running mates yet ahead of the May 10th contest.
