UPDATED: Authorities investigating fatal Union City hit-and-run where cyclist was killed

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating a fatal Union City hit-and-run where a 56-year-old cyclist was killed last night, authorities said.

“The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Regional Collision Investigation Unit and the Union City police are investigating a hit and run on 48th Street near Bergenline Ave that occurred at approximately 7:45 pm Monday evening in which a male cyclist was killed. More info to follow,” the HCPO tweeted at 7:48 a.m. this morning.

An eyewitness said shoes and other personal items, presumably of the victim, were in plain sight at the crime scene around 9:30 p.m. last night.

At 11:38 a.m., Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez provided further information.

Members of the Union City Police Department responded to the area at approximately 7:45 p.m. on reports of a cyclist struck with serious injuries.

The victim, later identified as Marcelino Pilco, of Union City, was transported to the Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased at 11:48 p.m.

According to the initial investigation, the victim was cycling northbound on Bergenline Avenue when he was struck and the driver fled the scene eastbound on 48th Street.

Detectives are looking for the driver of the vehicle, which is described as a white Nissan Rogue sport utility vehicle.

The Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit is actively investigating this incident.
