Arson task force investigating fatal Stegman Street fire in Jersey City, victim ID’ed

The Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force and the Jersey City Fire Department are investigating a fatal fire that occurred yesterday, with authorities also identifying the victim for the first time.

Shortly before 6:50 a.m. on Monday, the Jersey City Fire Department received a 911 call for a fire at 269 Stegman St., Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said in a statement.

Upon arrival, first responders located heavy fire in the front of the structure. During suppression efforts, firefighters located an unresponsive man, tentatively identified as Christopher Williams, 54, of Jersey City, inside the residence.

He was transported to Jersey City Medical Center where he was pronounced dead just after 7:30 a.m. A second individual, a 41-year old woman, was injured while escaping the fire through a window.

She was treated for non-life threatening injuries at Jersey City Medical Center and has since been released.

A preliminary investigation by the Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force determined the fire originated in the front enclosed porch of 269 Stegman St.

The cause remains under investigation at this time. The Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force is actively investigating with assistance from the Jersey City Fire Department.
