Qais Griffin, 23, and Jerome Gaston, both of Jersey City, were charged with two counts of possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose (handgun), unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon during a controlled dangerous substance offense, manufacturing/distributing CDS (heroin) and possession of 50 grams or less of marijuana, according to Police.Lt. Eric Amato.

Griffin and Gaston were taken into custody Wednesday at 3:18 a.m. the area of East 53rd Street. Officers responded to Quick Chek, located at 38 East 53rd St., on a report of two males sleeping inside a car which was illegally parked in a no parking zone, authorities said.

Upon arrival, the officer observed Griffin in the driver seat and Gaston in the passenger seat. Both males were asleep and the butt of a handgun was observed protruding from between the legs of Griffin, officials said.

Backup officers arrived on scene and, while Griffin and Gaston were still asleep, officers were able to gain access to the vehicle and safely secure the 9 millimeter handgun. Both males were then removed from the vehicle, police said.

As Gaston was being removed, a second handgun, a revolver, was located and retrieved from the floor of the front passenger side. The vehicle was then searched for additional contraband, leading to the recovery of narcotics and two ski-masks, authorities said.
