The two juveniles, both 17, of Jersey City, were each charged with attempted burglary and resisting arrest by flight, according to Police Capt. Eric Amato. The first teen was also charged with obstructing a governmental function.

Additionally, the second teen faces charges for three counts of motor vehicle theft, one count of theft, receiving stolen property, and possession of burglar tools.

On January 10th at about 11:47 a.m., officers responded to the area of 23rd Street and Avenue C on a report of an attempted burglary to a vehicle.

As officers arrived, the victim reported that she had just observed two men attempting to enter her parked vehicle who fled east on 23rd Street as she attempted to confront them.

She was able to provide a description of both suspects and a search of the area immediately commenced. Officers quickly were able to locate two men matching the description running in the area of 22nd Street and commanded them to stop.

Both of them refused to comply, so after a brief foot chase, officers were able to apprehend and take into custody the first juvenile from the area of West 21st Street and the second juvenile from the area of 22nd Street and Avenue C.

Both juveniles were positively identified as the actors of the attempted burglary and transported to headquarters for processing.

A search incident to custody of the second juvenile led to the recovery of two credit cards belonging to two different individuals from his person and burglar tools commonly used to break into and steal vehicles. As a result, both juveniles were charged accordingly.

While the second juvenile was in custody, the name listed on one of the credit cards recovered from his person matched the name of a victim of the following motor vehicle theft.

Furthermore, on January 7th at approximately 6:32 a.m., a victim reported that his 2022 Mercedes Benz had been stolen out of his driveway overnight in the area of West 18th Street.

As a result of the evidence recovered from the second juvenile, he was additionally charged with this burglary and motor vehicle theft, which was recovered in Jersey City.

He was also identified as stealing a 2019 Hyundai on New Year’s Eve, burglarizing a 2021 jeep on New Year’s Day, and stealing another 2019 Hyundai on January 2nd, police said.
