Prosecutor: Jersey City teacher charged with sexually assaulting female student, 11, in 2019

A Jersey City teacher at the Infinity Institute, which serves students grades 6 through 12, has been charged with sexually assaulting an 11-year-old female student in 2019, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez announced.

Apparao Sunkara, 67, of Hicksville, New York, was arrested at his home yesterday at approximately 4 p.m. He was charged with second-degree sexual assault and second-degree endangering the welfare of a child.

Suarez credited the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit and the
Nassau County Police Department for the investigation and arrest.

Sunkara is currently being held on the charges in Nassau County, authorities said.

According to public records, he began working for the Jersey City Public Schools in 2012 and earned a salary of just under $110,000 last year.
