Sonny Cash, 34, of Montclair, was charged with eluding, motor vehicle theft and possession of marijuana under 50 grams, according to Police Capt. Janine Foy.

On Saturday, February 4 around 5:48 p.m., Cash was reported driving a stolen 2017 Mercedes GLE350 southbound at a high rate of speed, swerving in and out of traffic, authorities said.

According to officials, the Mercedes was reported stolen out of a dealership in Union Township.

By the time he approached West 19th Street, Cash was seen driving on the sidewalk, refusing to stop for police, officials said.

While driving on the sidewalk towards Broadway, the luxury vehicle became wedged between the parking meters and the side of the building at the address 425 Broadway – a multi-use building that includes a barbershop and a nail salon, police said.

At that point, police removed Cash from the car through the driver’s side window without further incident, though he was also found to be in possession of marijuana, authorities said.

Officials inspected the building after the incident and deemed it to be in safe condition, officials said.
