HCPO investigating death of inmate, 32, of Jersey City, at Hudson County jail

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the death of an inmate from Jersey City that occurred at the Hudson County Correctional Facility in Kearny early Saturday morning.

At approximately 7:40 a.m., members of the Hudson County Correctional Facility located an unresponsive male inmate within his cell, Acting Hudson County Prosecutor Wayne Mello said in a statement.

Corrections officers and onsite medical personnel immediately rendered aid to the inmate, later identified as John Finucane, 32, of Jersey City. He was transported to the Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 8:30 a.m.

In accordance with guidelines by the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General, the NJOAG was immediately notified. This matter remains under investigation.

Finucane had been charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, contempt for violating a restraining order for domestic violence, weapons possession, and resisting arrest on October 5th, according to public records.

No additional information was immediately available, but this story will be updated if more details are released.
