With Hudson County Democratic Organization Chair Amy DeGise announcing her departure from the Jersey City Board of Education last night, advocate and former candidate Gina Verdibello is “in good position” to be appointed as her replacement, sources said.

Coincidentally, Verdibello was hoping to be appointed to the board after John Reichart resigned in November 2016, however, that seat was filled by none other than DeGise in January 2017.

Verdibello, a parent who attends almost every board of education meeting, has unsuccessfully tried to be elected to the BOE on four occasions – most recently running on a four-person slate backed by the Jersey City Education Association in 2016.

On that point, she has three former running mates who sit on the board: President Sudhan Thomas, Vice President Lorenzo Richardson and Trustee Gerald Lyons.

Amy DeGise, a social studies teacher and the daughter of Hudson County Executive Tom DeGise, said that she would be relinquishing her seat as of February 1st to focus on building the local Democratic party.
