West New York School No. 1 dedicated a tree in honor of former student Crissmarie Sevilla yesterday, a seven-year-old first grader who passed away from pediatric brain cancer in April.

“One way to remember Crissmarie [Sevilla] forever, here at No. 1 School, even when we’re all big at the high school and college, is to dedicate a tree to her,” said Jennifer Grom, a teacher at the school who had Sevilla as one of her students earlier this year.

In addition to the tree dedicated, students also honored Sevilla by releasing pink and purple balloons into the sky – as well as by blowing bubbles from bottles distributed by their teachers.

Norma Sevilla, Crissmarie’s mother, had to hold back tears when expressing her feelings about the event to Hudson County View.

“I thought it was very beautiful … ceremony they had for her, very special,” she said. “[The] tree dedication … I loved it, it was special.”
