One day after a new commissioner was appointed in West New York, another one has resigned. Commissioner Ruben Vargas, who has overseen both the Public Works and the Parks and Public Property departments, has stepped down today.

When reached by Hudson County View, Vargas deferred comment to town spokesman Pablo Fonseca.

“He submitted his resignation due to personal circumstances,” Fonseca began to explain regarding Vargas.

“He has chosen to leave his position that he has enjoyed and loved for the past three-and-a-half years. He would like to thank the town of West New York for the fond memories he has, as well as Mayor Roque and the commissioners for this opportunity.”

A source, who spoke under the condition of anonymity, indicated that there will be a special commissioners meeting at 10 a.m. on Tuesday to name Vargas’ replacement.

Vargas ran on Mayor Felix Roque’s “Together We Can” slate back in May 2011, with the ticket sweeping incumbent Sal Vega and his commissioners out of office.

His resignation comes just one day after Gabriel Rodriguez was sworn in to fill the void left by Freeholder Caridad Rodriguez (no relation) last month.

With Gabriel Rodriguez taking over the Department of Public Works, Vargas was expected to head the Department of Public Affairs, which will now remain without a commissioner until Tuesday.

  1. Roque will not seek relection. Roque will back out soon as the FBI makes it a new case. Vargas and Acosta have turned overs their secret wired tapes and the FBI is ready to move on.
