Son charged with killing mother, 60, in Jersey City fire being probed by arson task force

A man has been charged with killing his 60-year-old mother in a Jersey City fire being probed by the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office and the Regional Arson Task Force.

This morning just before 1 a.m., members of the Jersey Police and Fire Departments responded on a call of a disturbance at 18 Virginia Ave. Responding units found a female victim in the building’s first floor in critical condition, Prosecutor Esther Suarez said in a statement.

The victim, later identified as Jacqueline Nelson, 60, was transported to the Jersey City
Medical Center where she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at
approximately 4:14 a.m.

The cause and manner of death are pending the findings of the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office, while the fire was reported under control at approximately 1:21 a.m.

Terrance Nelson, 29, of Jersey City – the son of the victim – has been charged with first-degree murder and remains at large at this time.
