“Our location on the Hackensack River requires us to be capable of response to marine events,” Mayor Michael Gonnelli said in a statement.

“The acquisition of this watercraft by our Police Department, along with our existing Fire Department marine rescue boat, tremendously strengthens our Town’s marine response resources. I wish the Marine Operations Bureau the very best.”

Due to an increase of watercraft on the Hackensack River, Chief Dennis Miller of the Secaucus PD created the Marine Operations Bureau in 2023, to provide law enforcement service for the Secaucus waterways and to ensure the boating public receives safe, efficient and professional service.

The Marine Operations Bureau is commanded by Capt. Scott Coar.

Although the Marine Operations Bureau will not be on the water 24/7, members of the Marine Operations Bureau can launch the Secaucus Police Department vessel to respond to an emergency on a Secaucus waterway.

The Marine Operations Bureau has also joined the fire/police boat task force, overseen by the United States Coast Guard.

Every member assigned to the Marine Operations Bureau, regardless of their duties, are required to attend and complete a basic boating course given by the United States Coast Guard.

Furthermore, every member assigned to the Marine Operations Bureau, regardless of their duties, are required to attend and complete a course that meets the NASBLA Boat Program Standards.
