Hassan Degregoda, 30, of Jersey City, is charged with aggravated assault, leaving the scene of a motor vehicle collision resulting in serious bodily injury, endangering an injured victim, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon (motor vehicle), assault by auto, obstruction, causing serious bodily injury while driving with a suspended license, possession of a weapon (handgun) for an unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a prohibited device (large capacity magazine), and aggravated assault with a firearm, Suarez said in a statement.
He was arrested at his residence on Morgan Street and transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility pending his first court appearance.
Shortly before 1:30 a.m. on Monday, April 7th, the Jersey City Police Department was notified of a pedestrian struck in the area of Bay and Erie streets.
Responding officers located a male victim, later identified as a 37-year-old Jersey City resident, with serious injuries. The striking vehicle did not remain at the scene.
During the preliminary investigation, the vehicle suspected of being involved in the collision, a Mercedes S530, was located.
A high capacity magazine was recovered during a court-authorized search of the vehicle and it was determined Degregoda and the victim were involved in an altercation prior to the collision.
Witnesses reported Degregoda was armed with a handgun during the altercation.
Suarez credited the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit, Hudson County Regional S.W.A.T., and the Jersey City PD with the investigation and arrest.
