Prosecutor: Jersey City boy, 14, charged with fatal shooting of 15-year-old

A 14-year-old Jersey City boy has been charged with the fatal shooting of a 15-year-old last week, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez announced.

The 14-year-old is charged as a juvenile with aggravated manslaughter, possession of a weapon, and Possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, Suarez said in a statement. He was arrested at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in Secaucus.

Juvenile matters are confidential and no additional information can be released at this time.

On Monday, June 5th, at approximately 4:20 a.m., the Jersey City Police Department received a 911 call reporting a shooting at 124 Wilkinson Ave.

Responding officers located an injured victim – later identified as Tyshawn Smith, 15, of Jersey City – with an apparent gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at approximately 4:55 a.m.

The Regional Medical Examiner’s Office determined the cause of death to be a gunshot wound to the abdomen and the manner to be homicide.
