A fatal hit-and-run on Route 440 in Jersey City claimed the life of a 36-year-old pedestrian last night as authorities seek the driver, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said.

Yesterday, shortly after 9:30 p.m., the Jersey City Police Department responded to the area of 740 Route 440 in Jersey City on a report of a vehicle striking a pedestrian, Suarez said in a statement.

Upon arrival, responding officers found one pedestrian with life-threatening injuries in the northbound lane. The vehicle that struck the pedestrian had left the scene.

The pedestrian was later identified as Phillip Delancy, 36, from Jersey City. He was transported by Emergency Medical Services to Jersey City Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at approximately 10:25 p.m.

The cause and manner of death are pending an investigation by the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.

The events surrounding the crash are under investigation by the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit with assistance from the Jersey City Police Department and no charges have been filed at this time.
