Prosecutor: Driver struck pedestrian, left him for dead on the side of Route 440 in Bayonne

A male pedestrian was hit by a car and left for dead on the side Route 440 in Bayonne and the driver has been identified and arrested, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez announced.

At approximately 9:50 p.m. on Wednesday, the Bayonne Police Department received a report that the body of a man was on the side of Route 440 South between 21st and
22nd Street in Bayonne, Suarez began in a statement.

Upon arrival, responding officers found the lifeless body of a male on the ground at that
location. He was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 10:05 p.m., officials said.

The victim has not been positively identified and is pending formal identification by a family member. The cause and manner of death are pending an investigation by the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office, police said.

The initial investigation by the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit and the
Bayonne Police Department determined that the man was a pedestrian on Route 440 South and had been struck by a 2004 Acura that left the scene.

The driver of the Acura has been identified as Abanoub Malek, 21, of Bayonne. Malek was
arrested at approximately 1:15 a.m. on Thursday and was charged with leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident, authorities said.

The Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit is actively investigating this case with assistance from the Bayonne Police Department.
