Yesterday at approximately 5:11 p.m., Officer Nicklas Valerius was on patrol when he observed a male running southbound in the middle of Washington Street.

The man appeared to be chasing after a motor vehicle, prompting Valerius to perform a U-turn and witnessed the man on the driver side window of a black Toyota.

As Valerius approached, three individuals from within the vehicle exited and fled westbound from 5th and Washington Streets.

Valerius then gave the suspects direction of flight over the police radio and moments later, Lt. Jonathan Butler and Officer Marco Grossmann stopped three individuals in the area of 5th and Garden Streets.

On scene investigation led to charging all three juveniles from Kearny with theft of a motor vehicle and hindering, with one juvenile in possession of drug paraphernalia.

The stolen vehicle was left running and unattended in the area of 536 Washington St. at the time of the theft, police said.
