Adam Wisniewski, 58, of Bayonne, was charged with robbery, burglary and possession of burglary tools, according to Police Lt. Eric Amato.

Wisniewski was taken into custody at 8:18 a.m. yesterday from the St. Sophia Orthodox Church, located 39 West 22nd Street, on a report of a robbery.

Upon arrival, they were met by a male priest and female parishioner who were detaining Wisniewski. According to the victims, they observed Wisniewski inside of the church using a screwdriver to break open the donation box and removing the money from within it, officials said.

As they confronted him, Wisniewski pushed both of the victims in an attempt to leave the church with the money. They were able to detain him until police arrival. No injuries were reported as a result of the attempted theft, police said.
