Jose Ortega-Garcia, 39, of Scotch Plains, was charged with DWI, reckless driving, driving on a sidewalk, and leaving the scene of an accident, according to Police Det. Sgt. Jonathan Mecka.

Shortly after 5:10 a.m. on Sunday, August 8th, Police Officer Harold Milne was dispatched to the area of 1005 Washington St. on the report of a motor vehicle “crashing into multiple objects.”

While in route to that location, Lt. Michael Costello advised him that he stopped a vehicle on the sidewalk in front of the Elks Club, located at 1005 Washington St. The driver was still occupying the vehicle, which was still running.

When Milne, arrived he began his investigation which ultimately led to the arrest of Ortega-Garcia.

He attempted to park the vehicle further north on the 1000 block of Washington Street, however after coming into contact with a parked vehicle, he unsuccessfully attempted to flee the scene on foot, authorities said.
