Ranneil Wiggan, 25, of Bayonne, was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer,
resisting arrest, and obstructing a governmental function, according to Police Capt. Eric Amato.

Wiggan was taken into custody at approximately 11:36 a.m. from the area of West 31st Street. An officer on a traffic detail on West 31st Street conducted a motor vehicle stop in the area.

As the officer engaged the driver, later identified as Wiggan, the driver immediately became irate and refused to provide the officer with his driving credentials.

After continuing to refuse, the officer advised him that if he did not comply, he would be arrested for obstructing a governmental function, which Wiggan had no concern for.

Following further non-compliance, the officer advised Wiggan that he was under arrest and requested him to exit the vehicle.

Wiggan continued to not comply and as the officer attempted to guide him out of the vehicle, Wiggan tensed his body, began flailing his arms, and punched the officer numerous times about the torso.

Once additional units arrived, Wiggan was removed from the vehicle and continued to resist arrest until ultimately being safely secured in handcuffs. No injuries were reported as a  result of the incident, police said.
