Police: Bayonne man arrested after pulling kitchen knife during street altercation

A 21-year-old man Bayonne man was arrested after pulling a kitchen knife on a man after punching him in the face in the middle of the street, police said.

Jonathan Perez, 21, of Bayonne, was charged with aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, according to Police Lt. Eric Amato.

Around 1:50 a.m. Sunday morning, Perez was taken into custody near the intersection of 32nd Street and Avenue E. Officers responded to a fight in the area, officials said.

According to the 30-year old male victim, also from Bayonne, said he and Perez engaged in a verbal altercation at the sidewalk on 32nd Street and Avenue E. During the altercation, Perez was holding a kitchen knife in his hand, authorities said.

Perez then punched the victim in the face and threatened him with the knife. The victim retreated up the stairs of his residence in the area, but was followed by Perez, police said.

As Perez attempted to assault the victim with the knife, the victim was able to grab it, causing a laceration to two of his fingers. Police arrived at this time and separated the two parties, officials said.

According to authorities, the victim was transported to the Bayonne Medical Center for treatment of his injuries.
