New Jersey Democratic State Committee Chair Leroy Jones is backing Hudson County Executive Craig Guy to lead the local Democratic party, making it look increasingly likely he runs unopposed.

“As chairman of the New Jersey Democratic State Committee and the Essex County Democratic Committee, I have worked closely with Hudson County Democratic Organization Chairman Anthony Vainieri to elect strong Democrats who believe in our party’s values …  I thank Chairman Vainieri for his service to our party and wish him the best,” Jones said in a statement.

“I could not be more proud to endorse Hudson County Executive Craig Guy to succeed Chairman Vainieri as the next leader of the HCDO. I’ve gotten to know Craig over the years and it’s clear that he’s the right choice to build an even stronger party with improved capabilities and more reach into Hudson County communities. I look forward to working with Craig and his team to keep moving Hudson County forward.”

Vainieri said today that he wouldn’t be seeking a second term and endorsed Guy to succeed him. His candidacy had been expected since mid-March, when state Senator (D-33)/Union City Mayor Brian Stack put his name in the mix and supported him.

Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop, a Democratic candidate for governor, also endorsed Guy today, assuring a strong showing among Democratic committee members in Jersey City, North Bergen, and Union City, making Guy all but impossible to beat.

While the HCDO reorganization meeting doesn’t have a date yet, it is typically one week after the primary, which is June 4th.
