The Jersey City Police Department’s Burglary Uni arrested the suspect after unit officers identified and apprehended John Hyland, 54, of Staten Island, on Dwight Street and Bergen Avenue at approximately 1400 hours on April 2, city spokeswoman Kimberly Wallace-Scalcione said.
Hyland is charged with 22 burglaries out of New York City, seven burglaries in Jersey City, and finally four burglaries in Bayonne.
In each case, the suspect would smash the glass front door of the business and steal the cash register from inside. To that end, it appears he stole thousands of dollars from the over 30 businesses within the last month, Wallace-Scalcione added.
Hyland is charged with burglary, theft by unlawful taking, burglary with tools, and Cciminal mischief.
No injuries were reported during any of the burglaries and the Jersey City PD is working closely with Bayonne and New York Police Departments, as well as the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office.
