George Xenakis, 33, of Jersey City, was charged with shoplifting, possession of a controlled dangerous substance (crack cocaine), and hindering apprehension, according to public safety spokeswoman Marci Rubin.

Police Officers Wilfredo Gomez, Michael Aviles, and Tyrone Huggins, along with Sgt. Roary Miller, were called to ShopRite, located at 900 Madison St., on reports of a shoplifting in progress.

Upon arrival, the store manager told officers the suspect had dropped all the items and left the store. Miller located Xenakis and stopped him on Madison Street just outside the store.

A loss prevention officer provided officers the laundry bag Xenakis had dropped, which contained 51 packages of bacon, totaling $259.49.

During a search incident to arrest, officers found a small clear glass vial with a red top containing a white rock-like substance, suspected to be crack cocaine in his pocket.

He was transported to police headquarters, processed, and taken to the Hudson County Correctional Facility.
