LETTER: In wake of MAGA victories, HCDO leaders need to get better at listening

In a letter to the editor, Hudson County Democratic Organization Chair Craig Guy, also the county executive, says that in wake of MAGA victories, HCDO leaders need to do a better job of listening to community members.

Dear Editor,

The MAGA election victories of Donald Trump, the Senate, and likely Congress, was clearly not the outcome the Hudson County Democratic Organization was hoping for, but I am immensely proud of the hard work and effort that our members put forward for the entire Harris/Walz Democratic ticket.

Our efforts organizing phone banks into swing states over the course of ten weeks and buses to Battleground Pennsylvania to knock doors for democracy on weekends were not just well-attended, they were met with the enthusiasm and relentless determination I believe defines democrats here in Hudson County.

With all that is at stake, I am proud that the lens of our focus was primarily to aid the Harris-Walz ticket in battleground states.

While these efforts were not enough to fight back against the Red Wave that swept the nation, we were successful in winning key elections for Democrats throughout Hudson County on the local and federal levels.

I am particularly proud of the fact that we played a central role in making history in New Jersey by helping to elect the first Asian American Senator, Andy Kim, and the first Latina Member of Congress, Nellie Pou.

One of the most important things I believe we all learned as a result of last week’s election is that party leaders need to do a better job of listening to the voices of our community.

These are the people on the ground phone banking, knocking on doors and organizing in their communities and the HCDO Executive staff and I have heard from them in abundance since Election Day.

The main takeaway from those interactions is that, even in the face of this devastating blow to our nation, we need to pick ourselves back up and get ready to stand and fight.

As one of only two states in the entire nation with a gubernatorial election next year, New Jersey will have the eyes of the country and many around the world watching that election as the first true test to see if we will stand against Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans.

Hudson County and New Jersey must meet that challenge.

In my short time as chair of the HCDO, I have had the unique opportunity to observe the tremendous effort and passion for our shared values put forward every day by county Democrats.

Last Tuesday’s election taught us many things, but the most important is that we are stronger together and we need to truly listen to the many different voices throughout our organization.

With critically important council, mayoral, county and state races on the ballot next year, it has never been more critical for us to stand together, listen, and do the work required to help shape the future of communities throughout Hudson County.

That work starts now.

Craig Guy
HCDO chair and Hudson County executive

  1. If this worthless hypocrite were serious about listening to the community, he would dismantle the corrupt machine of which he sits atop and let Hudson County have a real democracy for once. Instead, he’ll pay lip service to community issues while continuing to pat himself on the back for a disastrous performance. There’s nothing to be proud of when your only job is to turn out Democrats in a general and you can’t even do that.

  2. Chairman Guy,

To be truthful, I wouldn’t consider myself a support of yours. That said, I appreciate the tone of this letter. I hope you’re sincere about listening to your constituents. The HCDO’s actions in the coming months and years will show whether you are.

This is a time of profound change in New Jersey politics. Voters want better, cleaner government and open, fair primaries. The HCDO and other party organizations ignore this at their own peril.

  3. Let’s see. How long have we been asking to investigate or get rid of the same old people, such as Brian Stack, Sacco and now, Jim McGreevy dares to launch himself as mayoral candidate? Get rid of the people you know have gotten too comfortable in their position. Get rid of them or you will soon be out of a job yourself.

  4. The Republican Party in Hudson County is getting stronger everyday. We are uniting people from all walks of life seeking a better way of government with real transparency and common sense. We are not going away anytime soon and will continue to push forward.

  5. “The main takeaway from those interactions is that, even in the face of this devastating blow to our nation, we need to pick ourselves back up and get ready to stand and fight” says Craig Guy, out esteemed leader. What a fool.

The devastating blow to our nation has been the 30% plus rise in food prices and housing costs under Biden/Harris. Throw in overseas wars and over 10 million illegals. The Democrats economic agenda is a complete failure for all Americans. They’ve banked on people being non-white and Trump being unelectable as an election strategy, unable to face the idea that their economic ideas are universal failures.

  6. Anthony Valdes, you proudly displayed Trump’s picture on your scant campaign posters. Now you are pledging to be transparent with voters, like your idol Trump has? By all means keep running with that narcissist.Voters in our Congressional District saw right through that hypocrite and they saw right through you, as well.
