The Jersey City Mutual Aid Society (JCMAS) hosted a free Immigration Resource Fair at the Halftime Bar & Grill yesterday afternoon, with U.S. Rep. Rob Menendez (D-8) and Ward E Councilman James Solomon in attendance.

“This has been a project that I’ve been involved in putting together because I know there’s a lot of uncertainty in the immigrant community right now with the upcoming change in administration. People who work in and around the issue of immigration are scrambling to figure out their next steps, and no one knows what the future will bring,” JCMAS Co-Founder Amy Wilson wrote in her newsletter just before the event began yesterday.

“But at the very least, if people who are concerned about this issue can learn who their advocates are and what their rights are, only good things can come of that. So please, if you or someone in your life has concerns, come by and meet the people who can help you sort this all out.”

The office of U.S. Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-10), the Jersey City Department of Health and Human Services, Church World Services, Food Not Bombs JC, Maskbloc JC, the NJ Alliance for Immigrant Justice, Votes for All, and Welcome Home Jersey City all participated as well.

Wilson told HCV that about 50 people from New York and New Jersey attended the event to inquire about employment, health services, ESL classes, and passport/green card info, among other things.

“I’m glad we could make these resources available to the community here. Too often, people have lots of options and resources available to them that they’re not even aware of,” she said today.

“By bringing together all these groups into one place, we really allowed people to come and see what options are available to them and to make some solid decisions on how they’d like to proceed.”
