“Nathaniel brings exactly the experience and expertise our administration needs. He has proven he can lead communications through the most challenging circumstances while keeping the public informed and building trust,” Solomon said in a statement.

“As we work to make Jersey City more affordable, more accountable, and better run, Nathaniel will help us communicate clearly with residents about what we’re doing and why. Transparency is central to our mission, and I’m confident Nathaniel will help us deliver on that promise.”

Styer most recently served as press secretary for the New York City Public Schools, where he led external communications, media relations, and social media strategy for the nation’s largest public school system, serving over one million students and staff.

As communications director, Styer will report directly to Chief of Staff Laura Bustamante and serve as the primary liaison between the mayor’s office, the media, and the public.

He will oversee strategic communications, media relations, crisis management, digital presence, and public outreach efforts for the administration.

“I’m honored to join Mayor-elect Solomon’s team at this pivotal moment for Jersey City. The Mayor-elect is committed to an honest, effective government that works for residents, not special interests,” Styer added.

“My job is to make sure Jersey City families receive accurate, timely information from their government, can trust that City Hall is operating with full transparency, and that the full diversity of their city is represented in government communications. I’ve spent my career communicating on behalf of students and families, and I’m excited to bring that same commitment to the people of Jersey City.”

He is the third major hire Solomon has announced, following Bustamante and deputy chief of staff Kristel Mejia-Asqui, as HCV first reported.
