Benigno Gonzalez-Mendoza, 35, is charged with one count of receipt of child pornography. He appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Steven C. Mannion in Newark federal court yesterday, Carpenito said in a statement.

From March 9, 2019, through July 27, 2019, Gonzalez-Mendoza knowingly received images and videos of child sexual abuse, including videos of prepubescent children engaged in sexual acts with adults, authorities said.

The charge of receipt of child pornography carries a maximum potential penalty of 20 years in prison, a minimum penalty of five years in prison, and a maximum $250,000 fine.

Carpenito also credited special agents with the FBI, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Gregory W. Ehrie in Newark, with the investigation leading to yesterday’s charges.
