The Jersey City Education Association (JCEA) has formally endorsed the “Education Matters” team in the non-partisan November 5th Jersey City Board of Education race in a move that has been expected since the filing deadline in July.

“The Education Matters team exemplifies the qualities and expertise that are essential for advancing our educational system,” JCEA President Ron Greco said in a statement.
“Their collective experience and dedication to our schools align with the JCEA’s mission to support and enhance the educational environment for both students and teachers.”
This incarnation of the Education Matters slate includes Trustee Natalia Ioffe, Melany Cruz Burgos, and Ahmed Kheir, both of who are first time candidates.
The endorsement was essentially telegraphed since the JCEA has backed the Education Matters slates for roughly the past decade.
Nevertheless, JCEA 3rd Vice President Mike Greco, who is also the Education Matters campaign manager, said in July that all candidates will be sent a questionnaire to give them the opportunity to be screened by the JCEA PAC for an endorsement.
They will be the only full three-person slate running this year, with “Sam” Sumit Salia running as an independent instead of with a slate with Tia Rezabala and Matthew Schneider as was initially planned.
The sole independent candidate is Miriam Tawfiles, a former student trustee on the Jersey City BOE.
