Hoboken Councilwoman-at-Large Emily Jabbour, a candidate for mayor, is sponsoring an ordinance up for second reading to expand a municipal safe gun storage law ahead of Gun Violence Awareness Day on June 6th.

“As we approach National Gun Violence Awareness Day on June 6, I am recommitting myself to bringing attention and action to this life-saving issue,” Jabbour, who founded the Hudson County chapter of Moms Demand Action in 2016, said in a statement.
“Since guns continue to be the leading cause of death for children and youth in this country, we must continue to push for common sense legislation that will make our Hoboken community safer.”
Currently, New Jersey law requires storage of firearms only if a child or other person who is legally prohibited from having firearms resides in the household where the gun is kept.
The ordinance builds on this by requiring all gun owners to securely store their firearms when not under their immediate control, bringing local law up to the “gold standard” that exists in states such as California, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Oregon.
“We have seen the tragic consequences of unsecured firearms far too often – especially when children are involved,” added Hudson County Moms Demand Action leader Amy Faucher.
“These unintentional shootings spike during summer months, when kids are home more often. By passing a secure firearm storage ordinance, Hoboken is taking a critical step toward keeping families safe. We hope more communities across New Jersey will follow suit and put safety first.”
Moms Demand Action has chapters in every state and Washington DC, and is part of Everytown for Gun Safety, the largest gun violence prevention organization in the country with nearly 11 million supporters.
The Hoboken City Council will convene tomorrow at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 94 Washington St., with the public session streaming live on Microsoft Teams.

Fix the pot holes you nincompoop
Is this being done in response to the incident at Wallace with the drawing from a kid? They said that the parents(one of which is a teacher) had guns in the house.
You mean the parent that they abused? That was years ago. That was in Midtown Hoboken and was yet another law suit waiting to happen. It was unreal how they violated that woman’s civil rights.
This is an unconstitutional ordinance in the state of NJ and against federal civil rights pretending to do something. No one needs to do anything Emily says. Hoboken is a town of 60K not a state in the union.
No, I am referring to a 10 year old that was suspended for a week due to some disturbing drawings and his mom is a teacher in the district.
Gun control is clearly an issue throughout the country and Emily’s message here is certainly on point. Other considerations – bad guys will still get guns and we need to empower our law enforcement personnel to remain active – no more defund/constrain the police, please.
Second, and this really applies to all Mayoral candidates, we need explanations for how city spending has spiraled out of control, why projects are delayed and what specifically the candidate plans to do – on day one. Ruben has provided some numbers in his newsletters – a good start – but we need more. Spending needs to be brought under control – and we cannot keep hearing about Covid.
Gun control is not a big issue throughout the country – inflation, immigration, crime, health care, the stock market and multiple foreign wars are. This is nothing more than pandering to a small minded group of people who are already voting for her.
Lock up the illegal alien gangbangers and criminals and you’ll quickly learn that guns don’t shoot themselves. Emily’s actions here are certainly anti-constitutional, virtue-signaling nonsense. They’re not getting her votes for all her Ravi rubber-stamping.
