“The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office’s Homicide Unit and the Jersey City Police Department are investigating an infant death at 31 Suburbia Court in Jersey City. More information to follow. #JerseyCity,” the HCPO tweeted about a half hour ago.

In a statement released at 6:35 p.m., Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez shed more light on the situation.

Shortly before 6 a.m., the Jersey City Police Department and Emergency Medical Services responded to 33 Suburbia Court on a report of a woman in need of medical attention.

Upon arrival, Jersey City police officers found a 41-year-old female needing assistance, as well as an unresponsive female infant.

The age and identity of the deceased infant are unknown at this time. She was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 6:05 a.m.

The cause and manner of death are pending the findings of the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.

The 41-year-old woman was transported by EMS to Jersey City Medical Center for treatment and she was pronounced dead at approximately 4:50 p.m.

The cause and manner of death are pending the findings of the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.

On Twitter, Mayor Steven Fulop noted that the home where the two deaths took place were cited for health code violations last year, expressing regret that tragedy wasn’t avoidable in this situation.

People ask all the time the hardest part about my job. It’s issues like this. We were here at this same house last year w/violations. The “system” of local, county, state worked + yet here we are. It’s hard not to dwell on issues like this,” he wrote.

“And reflect where we could all do better. It feels like we got it right technically and at the same time clearly got it SO wrong. It can consume us as it is really so sad any loss of life.”

The Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit is actively investigating the case with assistance from the Jersey City Police Department.
