UPDATED: HCPO investigating incident where Bayonne cop fatally shot man armed with knife

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating an incident where a Bayonne police officer fatally shot a suspect who was armed with a knife.

“There was an Officer Involved Shooting on First Street in Bayonne just before 7am. More info to follow,” the HCPO tweeted following an inquiry from HCV.

According to police radio transmissions, the shooting occurred at 17 West 1st Street and is still being treated as an active scene. The suspect was armed with a knife and both he and the officer who fired his weapon were transported to the hospital.

A spokesman for the Bayonne Medical Center confirmed that the suspect was killed and that no one else was injured.

“A gentleman in his 40s with multiple gunshot wounds was presented to the emergency room. The medical staff provided him with the best medical care and trauma protocols. Despite the efforts he did not make it. No other reported injuries from the incident.”

Additionally, a spokeswoman from the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office said that the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office will be handling the investigation moving forward.
