Hudson County Executive Craig Guy, who is running to be chair of the local Democratic party, said “I personally believe that organizations could and should be stronger” without county lines in an interview yesterday.

“It’s right in my wheelhouse John, what I’d like to do is make our voter engagement so much more. We have so many folks out there, unfortunately, that are not engaged in the voting process,” Guy told HCV after his first State of the County Address.

“Whether you’re 18, 19, or 20, or whether you’re 74, the most sacred privilege that we have is to vote and I think with our team, the leadership at the county, our best efforts have to go into educating our public about the necessity of votes.”

Guy also referred to the old adage that all elections have consequences, noting that Donald Trump was elected president in 2016 and subsequently appointed three Supreme Court Justices that ultimately overturned Roe vs. Wade.

He reemphasized that voter education will be a top priority and that higher turnout would be a direct result of that. When asked what would change with no county lines (an appeal is pending), Guy gave a very optimistic view.

“I want to take that same energy and that same education and that same funding to up that number now countywide … Now without the line, I personally believe that organizations could and should be stronger. I think that the organizations will work harder at getting their candidates elected,” Guy stated.

“And it’s going to be my job as a political leader to entrust our leadership and myself to get our people out of vote – that’s gonna take a lot of work, gotta put some meat on the bone behind that, but I have the fortitude and the energy to do that.”

Guy announced his bid for Hudson County Democratic Organization chair in earnest at the Jersey City Democratic Organization breakfast on Saturday, and in just a few days, it appears that the race is over before it started.

Current Chair Anthony Vainieri, Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop, New Jersey Democratic State Committee Chair Leroy Jones, and Gov. Phil Murphy (D) have all endorsed Guy for the post this week, making the odds a challenger appearing very remote.

A date has not yet been set for the HCDO reorganization meeting, but it is usually one week after the primary, which is on June 4th.

  1. Anyone is better than the entitled Vainieri and Amy DeGise. But the problem with being a county Democrat is there’s no reason to vote for their candidates unless you work fir the government, and the government workers bring their DMV work ethic to doing politics. The only line that matters in HCDO is the line for the boat check and the Bennies.
