Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) member David Guirgis announced he’s dropping out of the Hudson County commissioner race in the 4th District as former Jersey City Ward D council candidate Patrick Ambrossi gears up to run.

“For the past few weeks, I’ve been dealing with some health and personal challenges in ways I didn’t anticipate when I filed to run in January. As much as this hurts me, now is not the right time for me to run the campaign I set out to run or the type of campaign that the people of my home deserve,” Giurgis said in a statement.
“I am profoundly grateful to everyone who showed up for this race — all of our volunteers, everyone in the DSA and the Working Families Party, and every voter who stopped to talk at their door. You took a chance on a different kind of politics in Hudson County. Thank you for being a part of a growing working class movement — we’re building real momentum and none of this happens without you.”
Giurgis had been looking to unseat Commissioner Yraida Aponte-Lipski, who is seeking her third term in the June 2nd Democratic primary.
He had received endorsements from the North New Jersey DSA, Jersey City Council members Joel Brooks, Jake Ephros, and Eleana Little, as well as Run for Something and the New Jersey Working Families Party, all as HCV first reported.
Guirgis’ statement also noted that “District 4 is reading for a candidate for the working class.”
Ambrossi, who HCV had previously reported had been mulling a run for the Heights-based 4th District, posted on Instagram today that he will be collecting signatures for petitions of nomination ahead of Monday’s 4 p.m. filing deadline.
“Join us tomorrow at Griot Cafe to help get me on the ballot and elect a strong progressive commissioner to lead Hudson County into a new progressive era!” he wrote.
“I’m sorry to see David exit from the race and wish him good health. I look forward to expanding on my vision for Hudson County in the coming days,” Ambrossi added in a statement to HCV.
