A GoFundMe has been started for a MLB pitcher turned Port Authority police officer who died in a double fatal crash yesterday on his way to the 9/11 remembrance ceremony in Manhattan.

The effort has seen an early groundswell of support, receiving 484 donations for $79,405 towards their $4 million goal as of 3:12 p.m.
A married father of four, Varvaro played for the MLB between 2010 and 2015, with his longest tenure with the Atlanta Braves for four seasons.
Port Authority police have said that the double fatal crash occurred at the Newark Bay-Hudson County New Jersey Turnpike Extension at 4:25 a.m. yesterday, caused by Henry Plazas, 30, of Bridgewater, traveling on the wrong side of the road. He also died in the crash.
Varvaro was a Staten Island native who had been living in Jersey City recently.
