“We want to help candidates across New Jersey who share our values of breaking away from party boss politics, restoring OPRA, bringing back responsible campaign finance rules and delivering the kind of progress that our state needs. Eddie Freeman is a perfect representation of the kinds of leaders we want to support,” Fulop said in a statement.

“Competitive primaries make our Democratic Party stronger and support our democracy by giving the voters a real choice and encouraging them to get more engaged in the process, and we are committed to supporting candidates throughout the state who share our values.”

Elected in 2020 Freeman is a U.S. Army veteran who served in Afghanistan as well as a practicing attorney and a leader in the LGBTQ community.

Freeman becomes the fifth state Assembly candidate, and the first outside of Hudson County, to be endorsed by the Fulop campaign as part of its pledge to spend $10 million to support down ballot candidates who share his vision of reforming the NJ’s political system.

Freeman joins Hudson County Assembly members Barbara McCann Stamato (D-31), John Allen (D-32), Jessica Ramirez (D-32) and Julio Marenco (D-33) in running with Fulop in the June 3rd, 2025 primary.

The 8th District is one of the state’s most competitive battlegrounds and is currently represented by Democratic Assemblywoman Andrea Katz and Republican Assemblyman Michael Torrissi, Jr.

This will also inevitably be a showdown between Fulop and former state Senate President Steve Sweeney, who will have home field advantage in this contest.

“As a fellow military veteran and someone who has consistently stood up for reforming New Jersey’s political system, I’m certain that Mayor Fulop is our best choice for Governor and I’m ecstatic to not just support him but to run alongside him in next year’s primary,” Freeman.

“As a member of the State Assembly I will fight hard for working families and to bring much needed change to our state government, and I’m excited for the road ahead and to introduce myself to Democratic voters throughout the 8th District.”
